Why do Some Children have Adenoids?

Some children with perennial runny noses are diagnosed with adenoids. These children often suffer throughout their childhood, some even have to undergo surgery. Why do these children develop adenoids? Is it the water, the weather or is it the genes?

What are Adenoids?

Actually, all children have adenoids. Adenoids are glands located behind the nose much like the tonsils in the mouth. They are there for a purpose and every one has them. Like the tonsils, they help in protecting the child from infections.

When do Adenoids cause Problems?

As the child grows, the adenoids grow in size, too. It is these enlarged glands that start to cause problems. They can cause runny noses, persistent colds, mouth breathing and may even result in ear problems.

Why do the Adenoids Enlarge?

Adenoids are glands that help fight off infections. As the child grows and gets exposed to more and more infections, the gland has to work harder and therefore enlarges. It reaches its peak size by the age of 6 years and then starts to decrease in size. In fact, it almost disappears by adulthood, although on rare occasions some adults do suffer from adenoids.
